KENNEBUNK PORT CHRISTMAS PRELUDE RETURNS FOR 31ST YEAR
On December 6th, 2013, from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., the Kennebunk Port Christmas Prelude will arise with a clatter for the thirty-first time in Kennebunk Port, Maine to instill an old fashioned sense of Christmas cheer and family togetherness for the coming holiday season.
During the month of December, the residents of Kennebunk Port transform the quaint New England fishing village into a portal, delighting the eyes, ears and nose with the merriment of a Christmas season long since past. Ranked the #2 Best Christmas Town in America, Kennebunk Port pulls out every stop to entertain people of all ages during the first of two weekend celebrations. Fireworks color the sky to match the festive decoration in town. Lobsters dance in the streets spreading cheer by singing slurred Christmas carols. Food for any taste or desire is only feet away at every moment; just follow the direction of Rudolf’s nose.
After thirty-one years, the Christmas Prelude has come to have, not a little, but a big something for children and adults alike. And, of course, that big something might just be a visit from a certain big somebody. As a matter of fact, the prelude guarantees the visit of one North Pole resident by sponsoring magical lobsters to travel via fishing boat to pick up and transport the special guest to the Port so he can help ring in the season.
The Kennebunk Port Christmas Prelude has a magical air that transfigures the cold days of December into a warm delight. This is because the residents of Kennebunk Port strive to fill the town with the sense of community togetherness and camaraderie reminiscent of the Victorian days of Christmas. They decorate the town and their homes with lanterns, lush bounds of holly and

unique nautical ornaments. They line the narrow streets, dressed in holiday garb and period costume, and a-wassail and a-wander to the delight of parents and children alike. And at the end of the first day of wonderment, a towering Christmas tree adorned with a lobster instead of a star is lit before hundreds of people from around the globe.
Susan Jefaire, a life-long resident of Kennebunk Port, has started her holiday season for the last thirty-one years with the Christmas Prelude. “The prelude brings something alive inside of everyone,” Jefaire commented. “Christmas changes as you age. The joy this time of year brought during childhood, the twinkle it put in everyone’s eyes, dampers with time. But the smell of warm, sugary dough and the sight of thousands of shimmering lights reignite that flame for myself and others. I can taste my grandmother’s gingerbread again, and I can see my father tugging at big bulbs on dark green strands. I love that I live in a town that remembers how inspiring this time of year can be. It is so important to carry on this tradition, and let as many people as possible experience it for themselves.”
